As the blazing fire reduces wood to ashes, so too does the light of Self-knowledge reduce karma to ashes.”

Welcome to our second element. Fire is the great heart opener. The energy of the heart creates heat in our chest and throughout our body by pumping blood. Often, even beyond chaos and change, we need to stoke the fire of our heart centers. We need to breathe into these areas, giving oxygen to our internal fire, expanding the fire of our own internal sun–our heart. Having a hot, shining sun at the center of our bodies makes us less vulnerable to the fear of chaos.
I’ve pulled together my favorite explanations of fire for you, mostly for you to release any negative feelings you have about the element of fire and to conjure some fire where you think you might need it.
When working with the fire, ask it to give you clarity about something, and/or transform the energy of an emotion into something healthy.
We’ll do a release as a transformational exercise after our breathing practice.
The fire is used to cleanse all the sacred instruments, including you. It is said that the hearth is connected to the heart, and when we blow on the coals of our little fire, we are also feeding the embers of our own hearts.
Our hearts are a combination of water and fire, agua quemada, as the heart is the place which burns water into blood.
Fire is power. It’s action, the alchemy of transforming matter. It is a part of sex and sensuality. It’s heat and warmth, down to our very cells. Fire is indignation and righteousness. Fire is the sun that gives us life. It is primal desire. It is human rage and powerful enough to burn our bodies to ash when we die.
Fire is intricately related to matter. It is the only element that can alter the other elements. It is a powerhouse. That’s why it’s important to respect fire and understand our relationship to it in our own bodies. Scan your body. Are certain parts firey and others not? Do you have any imbalances with fire? I definitely do. Sometimes we just need a little more, or less, fire in our lives.
Another tip when working with the fire, a candle, a chalice, an abalone shell (which is what I use) is to look at the light the fire gives you after you ask it how to transform something. The fire light will tell you how to navigate forward.
Working with fire is incredibly rewarding as it can open your heart into sun-like proportions!
