Coatlique is the goddess of the most powerful force in the universe, the power of life and death. She is one of the main goddesses in Mexico and she represents the earth.
We begin with our essential self, our curiosity, our calm and equanimity, and finally our compassion. Our Self is the leader of our internal team.
Coatlique holds the power of life and death in her hands. As you can see, two hands are holding life-giving corn and a calavera skull in the other set of hands. She embodies the most powerful force in the universe. She is represents the earth. She’s still worshipped and feared. The curse phrase, “de la chingada” refers to Coatlique. The great mother who is f**ked.
The Self is the calm, thoughtful leader of the ego. Imagine the ego as a group of children trying their best. Our internal little kids need a mentor. The Self is our own personal social activist, they are courageous, confident and have clarity of mind.
Coatlique is good and bad. In this state of equanimity we can release judgement and find forgiveness for all parts of ourselves.
She is the internal protector and the good mother inside all of us who takes care of ourselves. The goal is to trust our inner leader as an advisor. Our goal is to trust the Self. There is a great mother inside all of us that is the leader, getting the team to work together and be more self-led in the outside world. Even if this self wasn’t there to protect us when were 5 years old.
See the 13 serpents on her skirt. We ask healing from the earth, imagining serpentine waves of energy into our bodies. We surrender to the earth mother, and connect the energy of our hearts to all the beauty on the planet.
We are one ecosystem. The planet isn’t separate from us, the animals or trees aren’t separate. We are beautiful and fresh like the earth.
This is a contemporary image of Coatlique as the Virgen Mary also known as the earth goddess Tonantzin. This image portrays the synchronicity of Catholic and indigenous beliefs into one divine feminine earth-mother archetype.
Her hands are open giving blessing and receiving prayers. Millions of people every year pilgrimage La Guadalupana. Walking, dancing, kneeling and singing their way from shrine to shrine until finally meeting in some holy place to celebrate.
La Virgen de Guadalupe and the many other females saints in the Latin American diaspora are considered more accessible and willing to grant prayers and favors then the male Christian god in Church.
Like nature, she is generous, equanimous and calm.
We are in an age where we are taught we are separate from the earth, just passengers aboard a ship. In fact, we are earth life force, breathing itself in, perceiving itself as awareness made manifest.
We can feel ourselves as the tree trunk and our many parts being our roots, our branches and leaves.
As practice for cultivating your calm inner self, try going outside and meditating or doing breathwork.
When you’re done, open your eyes and see how your surroundings have changed. You’ll probably feel more present.
